The Countdown Starts
If you haven't heard the news, the anti-smoking law will be fully enforced,on September 3. With the aim to enforce the law number 174 that bans smoking in closed public spaces, a new media campaign entitled “Fout Shemm al-Hawa” , meaning “come in to take a breath of fresh air” has recently been launched.
Organized by IndyACT, a league of independent environmental, social and cultural activists, in collaboration with Tobacco Free Initiative and the research department in the American University of Beirut, the campaign kicked off with the installation of an electronic countdown timer in the Martyrs Square.
A study by the American University of Beirut shows that Lebanese spend over $553 million on tobacco products annually. The figure includes some $512 million spent on over 307 million packets of imported cigarettes.
Another study conducted by the same university, suggests that a significant increase on tobacco taxation could boost government revenues by some $170 million, reduce the number of smokers and clamp down on soaring health expenditures.
Violators will face fines of at least LL135,000.
Whether the date for the law's entry into effect will be soon coming, its implementation, however, remains to be seen.
