Food Safety at Top of Agenda

Industry Minister, Vreij Sabounjian, received Tuesday at his ministerial office a delegation of food industrialists with talks touching on the importance of implementing the decision

agreed upon by the Agriculture and Industry Ministers to register food factories in conformity with the food safety law, as reported by the National News Agency.

“This decision aims at guaranteeing a better food quality and boosting consumers and international markets' confidence in local food industry. The delegation invited Sabounjian to participate in the national day for food industry to be held on March 22.”

The food safety problem has become increasingly troubling in Lebanon. Consumers have started to wonder what and how to eat. For experts, it’s time for the government to enforce food safety laws, set up laboratories for monitoring contamination of food and set microbiological standards for specific foods.

Migration to cities is increasing so much that, by 2050, the UN predicts that approximately two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities.
