Lebanon Should Rely More On Local Production. Hajj Hasan
Lebanon should reduce its reliance on imports and rely more on its domestic agricultural production, Agriculture Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan said.
During the signing of an agreement to enhance cooperation with FAO, Hajj Hasan said that the agriculture sector in Lebanon only represents 5-8 percent of the country’s GDP totaling $40 billion.
“If the GDP is increased to $60 billion in the years to come, the agriculture sector’s share will be at $3 to $4 billion,” the Hajj Hasan said.
He added that Lebanon needs to create, 10,000 job opportunities in the agriculture sector.
“It’s important to provide Lebanese farmers with seeds, fertilizers to assist farmers,” he said.
“The main target is to reduce imports and boost exports to cut the balance-of-trade deficit.
