Natural Gas. The Good Alternative
By Elissa Raphael. Reducing toxic power plant emissions will reduce fine particle pollution and prevent thousands of premature deaths, energy experts agree. In Lebanon, the project aiming to cut emissions and toxic gases produced by Zouk power plant, might be a bold step towards a better environment.
Within the project recently launched by Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, the chemical additives are able cut emissions of solid particles and gases including nitrogen oxide sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide, between 15 to 90 percent.
Bassil announced another project to reestablish the ouput of Zouk plant, adding almost 300 MW to the national grid. Renovations at the Zouk and Jiyyeh power plants are set to begin by end of this month, he said, mentioning that this project is to be covered through soft loans from the Kuwait-based Arab Fund.
The run-state firm, Electricite Du Liban (EDL) has commissioned a private company to build chemical treatment units for fuel oil, said Kamal Hayek, EDL general director, “which are expected to reduce fuel efficiency by at least 1 percent, saving around $5 million yearly.”
Many experts, however, see that natural gas electricity generation is significantly cleaner and more energy efficient. A policy to encourage the use of natural gas for electricity generation to help reduce emissions from the power sector remains the good alternative, they agree.
