New agreement on consultancy & technical aid
A cooperation agreement, of 10 months and with an amount of approximately $100.000, was signed between Lebanon and Spain, on consultancy and technical assistance under the title "Tools for the Sustainable Management and Conservation of the Oaks in Lebanon".
Spanish Cooperation has funded several projects in the field of agriculture in various parts of the country.
Agriculture Minister Hussein Hajj Hasan said that Lebanon needs $400 million for reforestation.” Almost 33 percent of Lebanon was covered with forests. Now, this figure was reduced to 20 percent as a result of fires, wars and random construction.”
“A project has been submitted to the beekeepers whereby the Ministry of Agriculture will provide land and seedlings, seeds and planting operations,” he added. “In their turn, beekeepers will establish a beekeeping Federation to manage the grazing and protect it."
In the strategic development of productive capacities, Spain has financed, through the Fund for the Reconstruction of Lebanon, programs such as CEDRO for the promotion of renewable energy (8 million Euros), "Flood and Water Management of Livelihood Recovery in Baalback - Hermel" (6.6 million Euros) to improve the irrigation systems and "Hydro project for Agricultural Development in Marjeyoun Area" (1.5 million Euros).
Lately, the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture received a grant from Spain for the financing of a project on the establishment of three water reservoirs in the area of Maroun Ras. NNA
