Stimulating Agricultural Exports Through "Agri Plus"

The Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL) seems adamant to support Lebanese farmers. The new program for the development of agricultural exports

Agri Plus, "which is based on providing meaningful financial incentives to farmers and exporters, aims to increase the volume of agricultural exports, maintain traditional markets, open new markets and contribute to increasing foreign consumer’s confidence in the Lebanese agricultural products” said Nabil Itani, Chairman of  IDAL.

Agri Plus also works on developing cognitive and technical abilities of producers and exporters, as well as the exchange of knowledge about market needs and requirements.

"This, in its turn, lays several foundations which enable them to meet these requirements, and allow their participation in international specialized fairs in Lebanon and abroad, and encourages them to enhance the packaging and cooling centers,” according to Itani.

Itani mentioned that the "Export Plus" program has succeeded in raising the volume of Lebanese agricultural exports from 284 thousand tons to more than 450 thousand tons per year.”

"The program has created new awareness for both farmers and exporters by informing them about the international standards in producing and marketing."

“It has also achieved indirect results, reflected positively on economic sectors linked to the agricultural sector, especially the packaging industries, and transportation, especially the land sector, including the fact that most exports are towards the Arab world. These results have also led to creating more job opportunities, founding new packaging centers and updating some of the old operators,” Itani explained.

Migration to cities is increasing so much that, by 2050, the UN predicts that approximately two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities.
