WARNING.Lebanon's Power Cuts Cause Pollution

If the political feud has recently been one of the main reasons behind Lebanon's nationwide power outages, its repercussions on the environment have been grave. "The power crisis has intensified air pollution in cities and towns, environmental activist Mazen Abboud said. Major reasons are the excessive reliance on the electrical power generated by the private generators, considered the most polluted stream, and not being compliant with the public safety standards, due to the amount of gases emitted by combustion.

“The growing protest movements that led to the public roads cut with burning tires, have also become the most important sources of pollution, during the summer where a little movement of air to clean the atmosphere, he added.

“The power crisis coupled with the popular movements had given the world a bad image about Lebanon and its government, during the presence of the Lebanese delegation in the Rio +20 Conference, he said.

Many other experts believe that the government should find a quick solution able to provide a regular power supply, trying to look for energy efficiency alternatives, to save the environment and cut rising costs of production.
